S.S. 410 and S.S. 420 are both martensitic stainless steels, meaning they can be hardened by heat treatment. S.S. 420 is a modified version of S.S. 410 with higher carbon content, resulting in increased hardness, strength, and wear resistance.

S.S. 410:
  • General Purpose:
A general-purpose stainless steel with good corrosion resistance, particularly in mild environments.

  • Composition:
Contains at least 12% chromium, sufficient for corrosion resistance, and 0.15% carbon.

  • Properties:
Hardenable, magnetic in both annealed and hardened conditions.

  • Applications:
Widely used in cutlery, bolts, fasteners, medical instruments, and nozzles.

S.S. 420:
  • Hardenable: A hardenable martensitic stainless steel, similar to S.S. 410 but with higher carbon content.

  • Composition: Contains at least 12% chromium and higher carbon content than S.S. 410.

  • Properties: Higher hardness, strength, and wear resistance than S.S. 410.

  • Applications: Used in applications requiring high hardness and wear resistance, such as surgical instruments, blades, and cutting tools.

Key Differences:
  • Carbon Content:
S.S. 420 has a higher carbon content than S.S. 410, leading to its increased hardness and wear resistance.

  • Hardening:
Both are hardenable, but S.S. 420 can achieve a higher Rockwell hardness (50 HRC).

  • Applications:
S.S. 420 is favored for applications requiring high hardness and wear resistance, while S.S. 410 is a more general-purpose alloy.
